Post Natal Care
Congratulations on the birth of your baby
The midwife visits regularly (daily or as required) for the first 10 days.
Register the birth of your baby at the Registrar’s Office and
with the Wilson Practice as soon as possible. (Please note, we
are unable to do baby checks or immunisations until the baby
is registered.)
- 10-14 days; (or whenever discharged by midwife)
The Health visitor will visit and plan future health visiting support.
Neonatal hearing screening test.
The Child Health Clinic run by Michele and Stephanie (no appointment needed) on Thursdays,
1.00–2.00

- 6 weeks; Baby Check and Post Natal Check – to check that you are
both well after the birth, to address any concerns and to
discuss immunisations and contraceptive needs.
Usually by your doctor.
- 8 weeks; Baby Immunisation Clinic – The 1st immunisations
(DTP, polio, HIB, meningitis C) will be given by the practice
nurse. Baby will be sent an appointment.
- 12 weeks; Health Visitor contact for Post Natal Depression
screening.
2nd immunisation given by practice nurse.
- 16 weeks; 3rd immunisation given by practice nurse.
- 8 months; Health Visitor developmental review.
- 15 –18 months; MMR immunisation
- 21-27 months; Health Visitor developmental review.
- 3 yrs; A birthday card will be sent with information about your
child’s development. Please consider carefully what your child
can do and contact us if you have any concerns.
- 4 ½ yrs; Pre-school immunisation.
The Health Visiting service offers practical support and advice to
families within the local community. Working closely with GPs,
Midwives, District Nurses, Mental Health Staff, Social Workers and
School Nurses, the aim is to prevent ill health and promote positive
health and well-being.
- Antenatal support and advice to both partners including an
informal "Get-to-gether" group.
- Parenting support, including home visits, child health clinics,
child developmental assessments, immunisations and advice on children's
general development, behaviour, sleeping or feeding.
- If you are a new parent you may be interested in the “Survival
Group” where aspects of parenting are discussed in a friendly
environment with other new parents.
- There is a drop-in support group for breastfeeding mothers
called “Breastfriends” which meets every Wednesday, 10.30 –
11.30 in the Health Education Room at the Health Centre.

- Support during times of depression, bereavement and family
conflict.
- Advice and support for people with special needs and their
carers. If necessary we can refer on to specialist services.
