Routine cervical smears are recommended from the age of 20 until 65 years: for the under 35s at 3 yearly intervals and for over 35s, at 5 yearly intervals. If a routine smear is abnormal, then the hospital will advise us how soon to repeat the test. Some smears are classed as "inadequate"; that is saying they are not good enough to be sure of the result.. You will be invited to repeat the smear test. This does not mean you have cancer! In fact cervical cancer is extremely rare now that most women have regular smear tests and we are able to treat the earliest stages, before cancer has really developed. The introduction of the HPV (human papilloma virus) vaccine for school age girls from autumn 2008 will protect the younger population from one of the major causes of cervical cancer, so we expect the incidence of to this killer condition to decline.
